When the Air Wedge (aka "pump" wedge) is positioned between the car door and door frame and inflated, the door is pulled away from the frame just enough to allow an opening rod (included) to be inserted. The opening rod is then used to unlock the door from the inside of the vehicle.
The longest rod in the AWS-1 Air Wedge System is the PR2 rod, which comes in three parts, and when screwed together, is 76 inches long.
