Plug followers are very useful tools that are necessary for re-pinning.

In order to remove the plug, you will need a plug follower. There are a variety of plug diameters, so you will need a variety of plug followers as a working locksmith. In general, the most common plug diameter for locks in the US is 1/2 inch. The purpose of the plug follower is to replace the plug, trapping the driver pins in the bible of the lock. The plug follower must be inserted from the back of the lock, and pushed forward to push the plug out the front of the lock leaving you ready to change the key pins in the plug.
